CBS News Trashes D-Day Heroes

It should have come as no surprise to me that a network which has chosen to ignore the compromise of our most basic freedoms at the hands of socialist politicians would attack members of ‘the greatest generation’ just a few days before the annual remembrance of D-Day. For those who attend public schools, liberal universities and do not watch the history channel, D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944 and was an invasion of Nazi occupied Europe by the Allied Forces. Those forces included soldiers representing many nations, but CBS Sunday Morning chose to single out the Americans as liberators who they seemed to feel made the poor French people pay a terrible price for their freedom from Nazi tyranny and oppression.

The CBS Sunday Morning report on D-Day aired on June 2, 2013. I watched the segment and was astonished as reporters worried less about the thousands of American Soldiers who lost their lives on D-Day trying to bring a beginning to the end of the reign of terror begun by Adolph Hitler and more about alleged atrocities committed by members of the U.S. Military. I saw the writing in the wall as soon as the narrator of the segment began talking about how many innocent French citizens were killed during the Allied bombing raids that preceeded the D-Day invasion and continued on during it. While I have no doubt that civilians were killed, I just have to wonder how today’s armchair generals might have expected a military that lacked sophisticated weaponry and targeting software to have gotten the job done almost seventy years ago?

Most liberals have no use for the military, so it did not surprise me that the CBS Sunday Morning report was incredibly and inexcusably biased. What did surprise me is the fact that the report failed to mention how that the German Army and the SS in particular was adept at using guerilla warfare techniques such as implanting snipers and sleeper agents in apartment, church and hospital buildings to assure their survival, thereby using civilians as human shields. They would wait until Allied Forces occupied a town, then try to pick off as many as possible while also causing the maximum amount of damage they could to military vehicles and other assets. Even with the amount of bombing that went on and a program of deception designed to cause the Germans to believe the main invasion points would be elsewhere, the Allied Forces still paid for every foot of ground they seized with huge numbers of dead and wounded soldiers.

As if it was not enough to blame the Allied bombing raids for practically every civilian death that occurred during the D-Day invasion, CBS took their attempt at a perversion of history to a new level making the Allies look more like criminal occupiers than liberators. They painted U.S. Soldiers serving in France after the invasion as thugs, bullies, rapists, thieves and murderers. If you believed their perversion of history you would think that members of the Allied Forces, and specifically American Soldiers, acted in a manner which was worse than whatever horrible atrocities the Nazis committed. According to CBS the Americans turned every town they entered into a brothel, raped every French girl they could find and stole anything that was not nailed down. The problem I have with that argument is that it is not true.

Let’s look at statements by French Resistance fighters, French citizens, non-French humanitarian volunteers and members of the U.S. Military that served in Europe at that time. According to their accounts there was lots of love making going on after many French towns were liberated, but it was consensual and usually instigated by the civilians and not members of the military. Whether for gratitude or profit, I do not see how U.S. Soldiers could be blamed for whatever moral choices the French made. I was also curious about why after attempting to make members of the U.S. Military look like rapists, thieves and murderers, CBS did not produce a single eyewitness, first hand report or interview to support all the allegations they made. What they did do was interview an author who wrote an obviously anti-military book about life in Europe after D-Day. They also quoted from a few letters written to General Eisenhower by various French Officials who complained about U.S. Soldiers having sex with their constituents by making use of available brothels. Eisenhower took immediate action banning his soldiers from such places.

No one is perfect and in the end over 9,000 reports of criminal behavior were made against U.S. Soldiers in Europe during World War Two. However, according to up to date statistics assembled by the U.S. Government, 3,065,505 members of the U.S. Military who were not killed or wounded were still on active duty in Europe in April of 1945. That number does not include the many tens of thousands who were killed, wounded or captured from 1944-45. Apart from the small number of members of the U.S. Miliary who were accused of crimes in Europe compared to the millions who served there, we have to look at another fact. Many of these 9,000 reports involved non-civilian related crimes like soldier on soldier fights, desertion, stolen military or personal property and so on. That was another fact that CBS News left out of their report.

Instead of constantly trying to re-write history and cast a dark shadow on the reputation of members of the U.S. Military because they are anti-war or oppose the use of military assets in international diplomacy, liberal news organizations should use the annual occasion of the remembrance of D-Day as an opportunity to make an honest argument against allowing young Americans to die for the tyrannical actions of despots like Hitler (Nazi Germany), Joseph Stalin (USSR), Kim Il Sung (North Korea) Hồ Chí Minh (North Vietnam), Osama bin Laden (al-Qaeda) and Saddam Hussein (Iraq). Every American member of the news media, regardless of their political views, should be horrified and ashamed at the CBS Sunday Morning report about D-Day for 2013 and should voice their protest loudly and clearly. They might also take the time to thank the survivors and family members of those that did not survive the invasion for their service and sacrifice.
