Who Will Win The Battle Of Sandy: Obama or Romney?

The arrival of Hurricane Sandy onto the USA mainland this past week could not have been worse news for anyone other than the residents who were affected by it, unless you happen to be running for President of the United States. Both the incumbent and the challenger suddenly found themselves face to face with a foe that cannot be controlled or subdued by words or campaign ads. The way that undecided voters perceive how the candidates respond to the horrific storm damage caused by Sandy may be the ultimate deciding factor in the vote they cast on November 6, 2012.

President Obama will be under the microscope in a far more measurable way than Mitt Romney when it comes to this most unexpected and unwelcome election development. The president will be harshly judged by the way the federal government responds to the aftermath of Sandy. Every day that people living in Super Storm created disaster zones do not see federal help streaming into their area will not be a good day for the president. Despite the fact that he appears to be doing everything within his power to bring disaster relief of one kind or another into the hardest hit areas, it’s all about individual undecided voter perception.

In a day when information travels at the speed of light people expect help to do the same. They see a government with seemingly unlimited resources and wonder why the equipment, gasoline and essentials they need to bring some normality back into their lives are not being delivered or dropped by air into their area. Former President Bush faced the same situation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Despite the fact that he was ready to send immediate assistance into potential Gulf Coast disaster areas, some of the State Governors and local politicians inexplicably refused help from the federal government before the storm hit. When they finally asked for it, the damage had been done to Bush’s legacy whether the government’s failure to respond in a timely manner was his fault or not.

If President Obama is at risk by how people perceive his actions concerning Sandy, Mitt Romey is no better off if he or his running mate make any verbal blunders which undecided voters might misconstrue as giving the cold shoulder to storm affected areas or victims. Sandy is an open wound on Americans which will not heal quickly. Already being compared to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in terms of the shear damage inflicted on people and property (with far less fatalities thankfully), the after affects from the Super Storm of the Century are not going away in a week or two. Even after the election the way the President and/or President Elect responds to this disaster in words and deeds will be long remembered by everyone.

If the President is re-elected for another term the people who voted for him and those who did not will scrutinize every action he takes or does not take to help the victims of Sandy get back to their lives. If Mitt Romey becomes the President Elect, those same voters will be watching to see how he plans to deal with the greatest natural disaster of the twenty-first century thus far. Will the kind of collections of goods and services his campaign is currently involved with suddenly end, or will Romney supporters continue those efforts? That is just the kind of situation that can make or break a President Elect even before he takes the oath of office.

Former President Harry Truman was absolutely correct when he said “The buck stops here.” Any President that even tries to do the kind of political sidestep often practiced by less than honorable politicians, that almost always involves blaming some agency or underling for a misstep, will probably be hung out to dry. This is one that the President and Presidential Candidate have to get right before and after the election if either of them want to have any kind of a future in government, politics or overall influence down the line.

People love it when politicians take positive actions that produce results, hence the phrase “Only Nixon could go to China.” President Nixon might be best known as the Mastermind of the Watergate Scandal, but he is also remembered as the President that helped to open up the closed nation once known as Red China to political and trade relations with the United States. Those first steps that he took back then are still paying off today. Winning the battle against the devastation caused by Sandy will not only affect how people vote, but provide the person that people perceive as the most effective in taking positive actions to help end the suffering of storm victims with a lasting legacy.
