Animated Family Friendly Films Have Become Consistent Hits At The Box Office: Should Hollywood Take Notice?

There was a time when family friendly animated films were the poor relatives of the mainstream cinema. Sure, they made some money and gave talented animators a chance to exhibit their artistry, but most were no where near as successful as their live action counterparts. Well, the worm has turned and Hollywood should take notice. That trend began in recent years with Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1989) and continues as another Disney flick called ‘Wreck It Ralph’ (2012) scored big at the box office this past week while many live action films struggled to find an audience.

There is a formula for success when it comes to modern animation films, but not just one. Some are animated musicals, while others seal the deal with comedy and well known actors adding their voices to the project. I sometimes think that all you need is a truly ridiculous idea, some good music and you have an animated hit on your hands. Look at bizarre hits like Shrek and UP. However, what I believe really appeals to the audiences that keep coming back to see family friendly animated films is the word ‘family’.

Viewing many live action films that have even as seemingly innocent a rating as PG-13 can sometimes be a very embarrassing experience, especially if you decide to watch those movies with younger family members. Just consider the nude scenes in PG-13 films like Titanic, Nell, Kramer vs. Kramer, Wild Wild West and so on. Even when it’s not nudity, you may find yourself cringing when everyone from adults to little kids utter phrases that, while they may not rise to the description of profanity, certainly qualify as inappropriate in many households.

During a press interview with actress Chloë Grace Moretz about a film she made in 2010, the then thirteen year old actress spoke about playing the role of the gutsy, foul mouthed daughter of a wannabee super hero and stated, “If I ever uttered one word that I said in _______, I would be grounded for years! I'd be stuck in my room until I was 20! I would never in a million years say that. I'm an average, everyday girl; when I act with my friends, I'm totally immature, I have to go to bed at 9:30, and, if I'm up late on the computer, I lose it for two months.” That film was rated R, but what Miss Moretz said drives home a good point.

I am not advocating censorship, just suggesting that Hollywood start making more films that better reflect the way young people really act, then some writer’s take on their behavior. They should present more family friendly films that entertain people of all ages, instead of making them want to run out of the nearest exit rather than watch the movie in front of other family members. That very problem with many live action flicks these days is exactly why so many animated films are more fun and easy to view with the whole family. The characters may act silly and even stupid at times, but they tend to do so in a manner that entertains, rather than embarrasses us.

One of the best things about most animated features is that they tend to teach positive values, whether that is on purpose or not. That tradition goes all the way back to the fairy tales and old world legendary stories collected and published by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm during the early to middle 1800s. Most of those tales contained some sort of a morality lesson that was easy for kids to recognize and understand. Today, most animated features have heroes, villains and the kind of stories that teach right from wrong and tend to inspire positive behavior in those who watch those presentations.

In a time when many live action films expected to be box office smashes ended up barely breaking even or worse, it’s interesting to note that an animated feature like ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ would end up coming in at the Number #1 position in earnings beating out all its live action competition by millions of dollars. I suspect that one of the reasons for the box office success of the film is that more than just one member family showed up at theaters to watch it.

Animated feature films may not be your cup of tea and it is entirely possible that many adults feel like they have been robbed of their time when they have to sit through one with their kids, but it does give families a chance to do something together in a day when most do things apart. Animated features also give children a chance to see that the good guys can still win once in a while and that we do not always have to use profanity in order to get a point across.
