Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert: Musical Role Models

No performer likes being singled out as a role model because it’s a title they have to live up to, but Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert surely fit the bill. Blake is well known to many TV viewers as one of the stars of NBC’s unique talent show 'The Voice’. The thirty-six year old Country Music artist from Oklahoma has certainly made his mark on the entertainment industry and he has done it in a mostly positive way. In day when trying to find a good musical role model in any genre of music is like finding a needle in a haystack, Shelton delivers the goods.

Three seems to be Blake’s lucky number. He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and has won the Country Music Awards Male Vocalist of the Year honor three years in a row. He also managed to share an award for the Country Music Awards 2012 Song Of The Year with his wife Miranda Lambert. The couple co-wrote “Over You” which is performed by Miranda who considers herself more of a song writer, than a performer.

As far as Country roots go, Shelton is right there. Born and raised in Ada, Oklahoma, Blake started his singing career at the tender age of twelve and was already an excellent guitar player by the time he was fifteen. After winning a talent award in Oklahoma, he headed off to Nashville when he was just seventeen. By the age of twenty-two he had a small recording contract which eventually landed him at the Warner Brothers label. After a song he wrote called ‘I Wanna Talk About Me’ was recorded by Toby Keith and became a number one hit for that artist, Blake’s own recording of ‘Austin’ became a number one hit on the Billboard Country Chart.

Despite a huge number of Country Music hits, Blake’s personal life has had a few bumps in the road. The death of his older brother Richie who died at the age of twenty-four in an automobile accident in 1990 was one. A short marriage to longtime girlfriend Kaynette Gern from 2003 to 2006 was another. Despite these sort of setbacks, Blake kept moving forward and eventually met and married Miranda Lambert. Miranda is seven years younger than Blake and the two tied the knot in 2011.

Like Blake, Miranda Lambert has strong Country roots. She was born in Longview, Texas, in 1983 and grew up in the small town of Lindale. She became interested in becoming a Country Music performer after her folks took her to a Garth Brooks concert when she was nine years old. A retired police officer, her father began performing country music and passed his love for it on to his daughter. Miranda began performing at local restaurants at the age of sixteen and eventually appeared on the popular Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas.

Lambert tried auditioning for record company executives in Nashville while she was still in high school, but they thought the songs she sang sounded too much like pop music for their labels. Frustrated at having to sing songs written by others, she learned to play the guitar and began writing her own music. Miranda appeared on the ‘Nashville Star’ TV Show in 2003 and finished in third place. That lead to a recording contract with Epic records and in 2004 Epic released her album entitled “Kerosene’ which became an instant hit.

Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton started dating in 2006 and had various professional musical collaborations including some songs they wrote together for her 2009 album entitled ‘Revolution’. With Blake’s star rising as a result of his musical triumphs and appearances on ‘The Voice’, Miranda has been making her own headway in the world of entertainment apart from her solo career and collaborations with her husband. Lambert recently made her acting debut in a 2011 episode of the NBC TV drama ‘Law and Order: Special Victims Unit’ and is part of a group she formed with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley called ‘Pistol Annies’. That group already has a hit album and a song on the sound track of ‘The Hunger Games’ called ‘Run Daddy Run’.

It’s hard to say where this amazing Country Couple will go from here, but Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert certainly offer a good road map for up and coming Country Music artists to follow. The lessons they offer are to be passionate about what you are doing, write your own music, perform well and never be afraid to expand your horizons into other areas of the entertainment industry. It was those very things that have brought Blake and Miranda to the very pinnacle of the Country Music industry and helped them to find success beyond those musical borders.
